Getting Through the Holidays

The holidays are hard - there's so much temptation to eat too much, drink more than your share, and maybe skimp on the mileage.  It doesn't help that daylight is dwindling, and there just seem to be more functions, parties, and work to do than time actually allows.  Here's a few tips to keep you on the straight and narrow during the holidays so you can hit the ground running come January 1st!

- Bring a healthy snack to holiday parties.  Need to be sure to not only eat crap during holiday parties?  Well then, bring a healthy alternative to share...trust me, others will be thankful for the healthy option also.

- Commit to staying active.  It can be hard to carve out the time to get in serious training during the holidays - so at least commit to getting out and doing something on a regular basis.  Even if you can only squeeze in a 20-30 minute jog, it's much better than not doing anything that day and will help maintain your base fitness.

- Sign up for a Fat Ass.  Fat Ass races were literally started as a 'get off your fat ass after the holidays and run' sort of thing, so there are always plenty of Fat Asses around the holidays.  Pick one, and log some untimed, relaxed miles with like-minded runners (or plan your own and recruit some training buddies to join).

- HYDRATE!  I know I tend to snack more when I am thirsty, so I aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day to cut the cravings for more treats.  So, carry your water bottle around with you like Linus and his blanket.

- Remove the 'all or nothing' mindset, readjust goals as needed.  I know that sometimes if I can't get in the full 8 miles I have planned on a given day, I give up on getting in any exercise - where still getting in 4 miles, or spinning for 30 minutes, is much better than doing nothing.  I also tend to think that if I broke down and enjoyed a donut at the office for breakfast that the rest of the day is ruined in terms of eating healthy and let myself eat whatever I want.  Know that things have to adjust during the holidays, and don't get caught up in the 'all or nothing' mindset.

- Plan your season ahead.  As you all get to know me, you'll know that I'm someone who likes to plan.  I always start to pick out my racing goals for the next year during the holidays, and it keeps me motivated to have these fresh new goals to work towards.

I know, none of this is rocket science...but hopefully it helps to get your head on straight and get through the holidays without too much guilt or added jiggle to the midsection.  Feel free to add your own tips below!
