1. Why did you decide to join team Run 2 Empower?
The mission of Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports and Team Run 2 Empower is so important to me because it helps others enjoy the same health, fun, and passions that have been such an integral part of my life.
I've been a competitive runner for 25 years. About 20 months ago I had a serious back injury in which a doctor told me I'd probably never run again. At that moment I felt like I had my self confidence and independence ripped away from me.
12 weeks later I did my first Ultra Marathon and regained those important characteristics that I always took for granted. This it almost impossible to do on your own. Vermont Adaptive instills and empowers this self confidence and independence in individuals with disabilities thru sports and activities on a regular basis, which is amazing.
As part of Team Run 2 Empower I want to help others live their best thru an active lifestyle and the right mindset. Fundraising as part of this amazing team is one of many ways we can help those with disabilities do exactly that.
2. What is your connection to Vermont Adaptive?
As a member of my local Ski Club in CT, the Norwalk Ski Bears, I'm an avid skier and snowboarder. I would often see Vermont Adaptive doing programs on our trips to Vermont at places such as Killington and Bolton Valley. The first time I saw them doing a program I thought to myself "oh man! I'd love to give back to something like that and be involved".
I recently saw Vermont Adaptive for a nice fundraising event at Two Roads Brewing Company in Stratford, CT. I wanted to do the VT 100 a year ago and remembered they were involved as the charity. It sparked the motivation I needed to join Team Run 2 Empower!
3. What are you looking forward to the most for this years Vermont 100?
I'm looking forward to the process training for an event of this caliber will bring. This will be my first 100 miler. More than anything, I'm looking forward to involving my family and friends through our fundraising efforts, my training, and race day. I'm hoping it inspires all my family and friends on a regular basis to step outta their comfort zones, dig deep, overcome obstacles, and realize that we are capable of so much more than we think!
4. What advice would you give to others on the Team?
I would share with them my favorite mantra which is "To Be Unstoppable!". Not just in the race itself, but in the months of hard work and training leading up to the event. That is where the real magic happens.
